IPL Skin Therapy
What is IPL and how does it work? What happens during the procedure?
IPL is a pulsed light that is exceptionally effective for treating skin redness (rosacea), brown spots, age spots and sun damage at a very comfortable energy level. A topical anesthetic or cooling gel is not necessary prior to the treatment. You may recognize results in just 1-2 treatments. The visible light delivered during the procedure is selectively absorbed by the pigmented spots and red areas on the skin. The heating of the pigmented cells causes the therapeutic effect. When the hand piece is placed on the skin, it will feel cool and comfortable. When the pulse of light is delivered, you may feel a mild, brief pinching sensation. A topical anesthetic is not necessary, but may be applied if requested. Treatment sessions may take as long as 1 hour depending on the area being treated.
What areas can be treated?
Any part of the body with uneven skin tone, diffuse redness, or sun and age spots can be
safely treated. The face, chest, shoulders, arms and hands are the most popular areas for treatment because typically those areas have the most sun exposure. Discrete brown spots, excessively ruddy complexions and skin densely covered with freckles respond well to IPL treatment as well.
How many treatments are required?
You may notice results after 1-2 treatments. Additional treatments may be required for very large or very dark spots, densely freckled areas, or excessively sun damaged areas. You should consult with your technician or physician to find out how many treatments are sufficient for the optimal results you desire.
What happens after the treatment? Will the spots and redness reappear over time?
Immediately following the treatment, the spots may start to darken. You may notice a slight reddening of the surrounding skin. This typically subsides within a couple of hours. Over the course of the next 1-3 weeks, darkened spots will fade and flake off. You mottled complexion will clear. Your final result may not be apparent for a month or more after the treatment. Treated damage will not reappear but, over time, new spots may appear if there is sufficient sun exposure. These can be removed as well. Remember to liberally apply sunscreen when outdoors to minimize new sun damage.
