Andropause
The majority of men begin to experience changes in their bodies between the ages of 30 and 45 years old. Much like women experiencing hormonal changes in their bodies, men experience similar hormonal depletion. This hormonal imbalance is the root of “male menopause” known as Andropause. The symptoms of Andropause tend to come on slowly and gradually increase over a period of years. Scarcely noticeable in the beginning, most men begin to notice a decline in their sex drive. Hormonal depletion coincides with lethargy, increased body fat, decreased lean muscle mass, and decreased mental acuity. Untreated, Andropause can have severe long-term consequences on a man’s physical, mental, and emotional state of health.
Although hormone replacement therapy for postmenopausal women has been studied, discussed, and practiced for decades, there has been little focus on hypogonadal disorders and hormone replacement treatment for adult men. This lack of focus is due to the fact that most physicians lack knowledge in the diagnosis and treatment of Andropause, and often the symptoms of male hormone deficiency are often attributed to other diagnoses and medical conditions. This can be most readily seen in the treatment of men with sexual dysfunction and/or depression. In many cases, Viagra and anti-depressant medications are being prescribed to treat conditions that can be readily treated through appropriate hormone replacement therapy. Misdiagnosis of hormonal deficiency has led to the excessive prescribing of the above mentioned medications and has resulted in multi-billion dollar industries.
Androgen has finally emerged as a prevalent topic. Men are now demanding their hormonal issues be addressed by a physician. Currently there are approximately 34 million Americans over the age of 65 years old, and it is estimated that this number will double in the next 30 years. Men now have the ability, through Andropause therapy, to live a more productive and fulfilling life while in their 40′s, 50′s, and 60′s.
